The origin of this turmoil lay on the Taiwanese island of Kinman, a mere 10 kilometers from the Chinese mainland. It was here that a group calling itself the Kinman Liberation Party launched a sudden and violent takeover of the lightly garrisoned island, drawing immediate parallels from the Taiwanese media to Russia’s "Little Green Men" in Crimea back in 2014.
As violent images from Kinman surfaced, anti-China protests erupted in Taipei, met with counter protests and fierce reactions from riot police. This chaos only exacerbated the existing tensions, with graphic reports of violence by the Liberation Party inciting public outrage.
