Using a military aircraft like the C-17 might seem extravagant on the surface, akin to the controversy faced by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie when he used a state helicopter for personal reasons. However, there are operational and efficiency justifications for military transport. Military pilots need flight hours to maintain their operational status, and each mission helps fulfill those requirements. In some cases, having an aircraft ready and available immediately may actually save taxpayers money versus waiting for a chartered flight when detainees are already accruing daily detention costs.
