By 2007, Brad Katsuyama was the head of the U.S. Equity Risk Trading Operations at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). As he executed straightforward trades for his clients, he became suspicious when he noticed that when he attempted to buy stocks, prices moved against him instantaneously. After years of dealing with the issue, he started to suspect foul play; it felt like someone had a direct line to his trading intentions.
Despite his initial intentions of merely proving a technical glitch, when he reached out to tech support, it became evident something more sinister was at play. This led him down a path of understanding that would ultimately transform how he approached trading at RBC.
