After falling into German hands, the city was characterized by violence, starvation, and forced labor. The Jewish population suffered immensely, facing extermination as well as other residents classified as being sympathetic to the Soviets. Over the course of occupation, Kharkov experienced repeated shifts between being under Soviet and German control, further complicating the terrain of survival.
