By 2016, Anglophone grievances erupted into protests focused on the increasing imposition of French in the education system and government. When repression led to armed resistance, various separatist factions emerged, culminating in the declaration of the self-proclaimed Federal Republic of Ambazonia in 2017. The response from President Paul Biya's government was to dispatch military forces, escalating the violence rather than quelling it.
Since then, the conflict has transformed from street protests into a full-blown civil war characterized by widespread atrocities on both sides. The UN reported that over 6,000 people have died amid this violence, with estimates of nearly two million requiring humanitarian assistance.
