Kagame’s entry into military life began when he crossed paths with Yoweri Museveni, the eventual president of Uganda. Joining Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA) not only honed his military skills but also solidified his commitment to political activism. As the years passed, Kagame ascended to significant roles within the Ugandan military, including head of military intelligence.
Realizing the potential for Rwandan refugees to reclaim their homeland, Kagame and fellow exiles established the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in 1987. The RPF sought to address the grievances of Rwandan exiles, and under Kagame’s leadership, it transformed into a disciplined guerrilla force, ready to challenge the Hutu-led government back home.
