Cuba's revolution inspired a wave of leftist movements throughout the Caribbean. By the late 1970s, the socialist experiment took root in Grenada, where Maurice Bishop led a bloodless coup against a US-backed government. However, as fears of communism spread, the US swiftly launched Operation Urgent Fury in 1983, leading to another military intervention and the restoration of a pro-American regime.

Another significant flashpoint occurred in the Dominican Republic in 1965 when the US intervened to quash a civil war sparked by the desire to restore a democratically-elected leader. Before long, an anti-communist government was reinstated, once again solidifying Washington's stance against any form of leftist governance in the Caribbean.
