Part 3/8:
Symbolism and Infrastructure Development
The canal’s name, Fanto, bears historical significance as it references the ancient Chinese name for Cambodia. This connection underscores the cultural influence China has exerted over the region for centuries.
The canal's design incorporates supporting infrastructure, including dams, bridges, and extensive roads, set for completion by 2028. With the goal of bolstering its agricultural sector, Cambodia aspires to become one of the world’s top agricultural producers by 2030. Currently, the nation remains heavily dependent on river trade through the Mekong, which limits its ability to engage in robust land-based trade due to inadequate paved road networks.
