NATO's intervention in the form of airstrikes marked a significant moment in international military involvement in ethnic conflicts. The Dayton Accords subsequently ended the war in 1995, effectively partitioning Bosnia into two entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. Despite the peace agreement, the region remained fragmented and deeply scarred from war, far from restored unity.

Serbia and Montenegro loosely continued under the name of Yugoslavia until Montenegro's secession in 2006, culminating the dissolution of the federation.
