To assess the profitability of a coffee shop, one must look at industry benchmarks. Typically, a coffee shop averages a net profit margin of around five percent. For a café grossing $700,000 a year, this translates into about $35,000 for the owners after covering loans, taxes, and other expenses. While that figure can seem underwhelming after a grueling 70-hour work week, it does not account for the outliers that consistently outperform their peers. Rather than simply asking if owning a coffee shop is worthwhile, it's more relevant to investigate what successful café owners are doing differently.
