Small business owners often find themselves in a complicated position. They may view themselves as capitalists who have escaped working-class status; however, the reality is that the capitalist system is often not structured to support small businesses. With the specter of larger corporations encroaching upon their territory, small business owners are often fighting an uphill battle, one that may see them devoured by the very large establishments they fear.
Yet, the struggle to identify with the capitalist class continues. The ingrained belief that economic success equates to class status fosters a disconnect. In reality, small business owners share more in common with the working class—both face economic vulnerability and the unpredictability of market dynamics.
