As of January 2025, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 Rwandan troops have bolstered M23, which has rapidly expanded its control in North Kivu Province. Most shockingly, the city of Goma fell to M23 forces by the end of January after intense fighting, marking the most critical escalation in the DRC conflict in over a decade. The UN estimates that the violent siege resulted in at least 3,000 deaths and displaced over 700,000 people, a tragedy that has received little media attention compared to global conflicts.
