Understanding the current conflict requires examination of its historical roots, particularly the 1994 Rwandan genocide, during which around 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by extremist Hutus. After the genocide, Paul Kagame and his Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) overthrew the genocidal regime and subsequently faced a mass exodus of Hutus into neighboring DRC. This reversal of power led to significant tension and set the stage for subsequent warfare.
