The prior federal election in 2021 concluded with a narrow victory for the SPD, then led by Olaf Scholz. The SPD emerged as the front-runner, followed closely by the CDU/CSU, with the Greens, FDP, and AfD rounding out the top parties. The SPD formed a coalition with the Greens and FDP, known as the traffic light coalition due to the parties' color associations. Initially, the coalition started on solid ground with Scholz maintaining a promising 25.7% vote share.
