Returning to Rhodesia in the 1960s, Mugabe joined the National Democratic Party, which later evolved into the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and eventually the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). With each political shift, Mugabe’s stature as a leader grew, even as he faced imprisonment for subversive activities. He continued to educate himself during his incarceration, using the time to enhance his philosophical and strategic thinking.
