Part 2/11:
To understand the current crisis in Mozambique, one must first appreciate the nation's tumultuous history. Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese colonial rule only in 1975 after a protracted liberation struggle. The subsequent establishment of a one-party state under the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) soon paved the way for a radical shift towards Marxist principles. However, the party's governance faced challenges from the emergence of the National Resistance Movement (RENAMO), which protested against FRELIMO's rule. This conflict led to a brutal civil war that lasted for 15 years, leaving deep scars on the population and shaping the country's political landscape today.
