After FRELIMO's 1992 peace agreement, Mozambique transitioned from communism to a capitalist economy. Under President Joaquim Chissano’s leadership, the country was heralded as a success story in Africa. However, beneath the surface of this perceived democratic stability, years of corruption were festering. Notable scandals, such as the infamous Tuna Bond Scandal in 2013, led to the embezzlement of billions of dollars from the government, causing a financial crisis, drastic currency devaluation, and widespread disenchantment among the citizens.
