The administration’s stance is similarly harsh toward Middle Eastern allies. Jordan and Egypt, which have historically stood by American interests even at the expense of public dissent, now face critical reductions in aid. A staggering cut of $800 million from U.S. assistance could destabilize Jordan's already fragile economy. Additionally, the U.S. is placing heavy demands on these countries regarding their stance on Palestinian refugees from Gaza, which only adds to the strain.
Such actions push trusted allies to seek new partnerships elsewhere. The Gulf states are finding themselves at a crossroads with respect to U.S. policies that seem to incentivize them to look toward other powers, particularly China, for support rather than Washington.
