Historically, Sweden has prided itself on being a sanctuary for those fleeing conflict and poverty. The post-World War II era marked a significant increase in immigration, initially welcoming people from neighboring Nordic countries, Germany, and later, Southern Europe. However, the real influx began with the arrival of refugees from war-torn regions like Chile, Iraq, and Somalia, escalating further with the Syrian Civil War starting in 2011.

By 2020, nearly one out of every four residents was born outside Sweden or was the child of immigrants. While Sweden’s approach to immigration was initially perceived as compassionate and inclusive, the lack of effective integration strategies soon became apparent.
