Changes to the EU's Veto System
Addressing the geopolitical strife, there’s also a discussion around potential reforms to the EU’s veto system, particularly within foreign policy. Currently, any member state can halt the approval of decisions, which complicates unified responses to crises. There is pressure to transition to a qualified majority system, which would facilitate more collective decision-making while balancing the interests of larger and smaller states.
However, resistance remains due to the inherent risks that such changes could impose on national sovereignty and individual state interests. The path forward requires careful navigation of these sensitive issues in order to enhance EU's foreign policy coherence.
