Far from being a radical outsider, Merz is a well-established figure within German politics, having previously attempted to become Chancellor two decades prior. In essence, his election is more akin to Mitt Romney’s success in America—representing established political norms rather than a substantial ideological shift or revolutionary movement.
The significant aspect to note here is that despite Merz's ascendance, this result does not equate to a rejection of the political establishment. Instead, it reflects a continuity within it.
