Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, presents a fascinating case study of population distribution within a densely populated country. Although Japan boasts a total population of approximately 125 million, Hokkaido is home to only about 5.1 million people, which represents roughly 4% of the nation's total. Despite encompassing a significant land area accounting for 20% of Japan's territory—more considerable than some European countries like Austria—Hokkaido’s population density is markedly lower than that of other major regions in Japan.
