The European Union (EU) currently possesses many characteristics akin to a federation, including a single market, currency, and a degree of central governance through institutions like the European Parliament and Commission. However, fundamental issues such as a lack of shared defense, sovereignty, and a robust central government, particularly regarding taxation powers, hinder full federalization.
Efforts to reform treaties, consolidate defense policies, and centralize power face significant hurdles, especially from euroskeptic voices within member states like Hungary. Yet, changing political landscapes in upcoming elections could provide openings for deeper European integration.
