A record 23 out of 32 NATO countries were meeting or exceeding the 2% GDP target for defense spending as of last year—a stark increase from just three nations a decade prior.
Challenges Ahead for European Defense
Despite these assets, several significant challenges loom. First, increased defense budgets will take time to transform into active military strength. The fragmentation of Europe’s military industries leads to inefficiencies, delaying essential improvements. Compounding this issue is the struggle many European forces face in recruitment, further hampering their readiness.
