In contrast, U.S. presidential elections are structured around an Electoral College system, which is a somewhat misleading title as it resembles an indirect method of election. Voters effectively choose electors pledged to candidates rather than directly voting for the candidates themselves. The number of electors from each state is determined by its representation in Congress (two senators and a varying number of House representatives), thus benefiting less populous states disproportionately due to the guaranteed two senators they receive.
