In a separate but equally significant security development, the notorious ransomware gang known as Eight Bas was dismantled by law enforcement after a successful operation. Their operation was dubbed “Phobos Ator” in a coordinated effort from authorities from Switzerland and the US, leading to the arrest of the alleged cybercriminals during a seemingly ordinary movie night.
Eight Bas, which had quickly become a formidable player in the ransomware landscape since its emergence in 2023, targeted small and medium-sized businesses, stealing a total of $16 million from over 1,000 victims worldwide. By concentrating on smaller payouts, their attacks often flew under the radar, but the recent takedown was a significant blow to their operations and served as a warning to other potential victims.
