Prior to the assault on trenched positions, soldiers committed themselves to weeks of specific practice meant to ensure success under complex combat conditions. The assault on position 109 presented unique challenges; in addition to the physical fortification of the trenches and resistance from enemy forces, the soldiers had to prepare for artillery barrages and drone surveillance that threatened their movements.
