By the end of 2011, non-violent protests had evolved into armed resistance, giving birth to a myriad of rebel forces rallying against the government. The Free Syrian Army's efforts were initially disjointed, as they lacked the armament and organization necessary to confront the still-powerful Syrian military. The nature of the conflict soon resembled an insurgency, where rebels attempted to ambush government units, particularly in Sunni dominant regions harboring resentment against the Alawite rule.
