As the conflict dragged on, shifting alliances and divisions marred the opposition's effectiveness. The Islamic Front showed promise at one point; however, internal struggles, coupled with foreign powers' differing interests, left the ground troops disorganized. Islamist factions began seeking control while moderates struggled to maintain credibility and support.
Moreover, the Russian intervention in 2015 aimed to reclaim territory for Assad significantly changed the momentum, restoring some level of stability for the regime. By recognizing Assad's regime as a bulwark against ISIS, Russia and Iran helped solidify his hold on power.
