Upon gaining independence in 1947, the princely states, including the Khanate of Kalat, had the option to join either India or Pakistan. Initially opting for independence, the Khanate succumbed to Pakistani pressure and joined Pakistan in 1948. This decision has been a significant source of resentment among the Baloch people, leading to multiple insurgencies fueled by a perceived sense of forced incorporation and ongoing neglect from the central government.
