Born in 1919 in what was then Vuori, Finland, Tony's early life was influenced by his family's history in the Finnish Civil War. His father fought against the communists, instilling in Tony a profound aversion to the ideology. At 19, he joined the reserve unit of the Finnish Army, just as Finland was emerging from its own tumultuous period, having gained independence from Soviet Russia.
