The institution struggled with chronic underfunding and understaffing, leading exhausted staff members to work round the clock. To ensure that nurses and other staff could remain nearby, the hospital provided on-site housing. While some doctors enjoyed homes on the premises, nurses and maintenance staff were relegated to dormitory-style accommodations known as the nurses’ dormitory, which was operational from 1939 until 1996.
