Established in 1884, the Brian Building within the temporary home served various purposes over the years, housing orphans, mentally ill individuals, and patients requiring medical attention. Initially designed as a refuge for neglected children, it became a grim place where many stayed for far longer than intended, often never reunited with their families. Following its transition in 1949 to Norwich State Hospital, the building became a site for the care of “sickly and scile patients," further entwining its identity with treatment that would later be scrutinized for its ethical implications.
