Originally established as a Marine hospital, Bailey Seaton rapidly expanded its facilities over the next several decades. An event of historical significance occurred on May 6, 1857, when the nearby New York Marine Hospital in Tottenville was attacked by a local mob. The populace, fearing the introduction of diseases by newly arrived immigrants, resorted to mob violence. This tragic chapter continued the following year when Bailey Seaton itself was set ablaze in a second mob attack. These events are now referred to as the "Staten Island Quarantine War," indicatively highlighting the intersection of fear, public health, and violent responses.
