Concurrently, Edward, Albert's friend, supports him after witnessing the fallout of the breakup. Edward is in a relationship with Ruth, a woman who works at the saloon, which draws mockery and judgment from the townsfolk. But their bond remains steadfast. Albert, unable to shake off the memories of Louise, spirals into drunken despair, ranting about the perils of the Wild West, where even nature seems conspiring against him.
