As fatigue and desperation mount, the duo encounters another sandstorm. When the storm subsides, a dreadful realization hits Mike: they are in an area riddled with landmines. Despite showing signs of anxiety over the sign warning of danger, they decide to press on, a decision that leads to their near demise. In a cataclysmic moment, Tommy inadvertently steps on a landmine, resulting in an explosion that leaves him gravely injured.
The intensity of the scene highlights the brutal realities of warfare and the physical and emotional toll it exacts on soldiers. Mike’s transformation from fellow soldier to caretaker ensues as he attempts to guide Tommy through their predicament while remaining conscious of his own precarious situation, having discovered he too is standing on a mine.
