Sam, surrounded by her friends Lindsay, Ally, and Elody, learns that she is expected to have an intimate encounter with her popular boyfriend, Rob. The pressure mounts as Elody hands her protection, simultaneously teasing her about the upcoming night.
As the day continues, we see glimpses of the extravagant world of high school, complete with absurd jokes from their teacher, Mr. Daimler, and the disruptive effects of Cupid's Day roses. The attention Sam receives from her boyfriend Rob feels good, yet comes with a sense of emotional ambivalence, particularly when she receives another rose from a classmate, Kent, who seems to understand her better than Rob.
