As Lorenzo flees the town on horseback, we are introduced to Pia, the town's princess, who grapples with the emotional weight of her parents' demise from the plague. Her situation becomes dire when Gino claims that her father owed him a large sum of money and had mortgaged their estate to settle debts. With Gino's deceitful grip tightening, he insists that the only way for Pia to escape his clutches is through a marriage proposal, leaving her distraught and without an answer.
