Two years later, Patch enrolls as an unconventional first-year student at Virginia Medical University at an age where most would have long since graduated. He quickly finds himself at odds with the institution's strict, emotionally sterile approach to medicine, which is embodied in the intimidating principal, Dr. Walcott. Patch's carefree attitude draws the ire of some classmates, but he forms friendships with fellow students Truman and Karen, who initially underestimate him.
