As the family grapples with their financial struggles, throughout the film, both Arthur and Norma are faced with increasingly dire financial realities. Arthur, who dreams of going into space, faces rejection from NASA, further compounding their desperate situation. Norma experiences similar pressure when her job security is threatened, and both become entangled in a moral quandary that tests their values.
The Sinister Offer
When Stewart presents his offer to the couple — the chance to receive one million dollars in exchange for a button press that will result in a stranger's death — they are initially bewildered. Unable to grasp the full implications of their choice, they find themselves on a slippery slope toward decision-making defined by their increasing desperation and fear.
