Eventually, the group encounters the indigenous Ewha people, who explain their reverence for Kong, seeing him as a deity that protects them against the subterranean skull crawlers—deadly creatures that pose the real threat to both them and Kong. Hank, who has survived on Skull Island for decades, further narrates Kong’s protector role, signifying that if the giant ape were to fall, chaos would reign as the skull crawlers would reclaim the dominion over the island.
