Despite this initial setback, Escalante resolves to make the best of the situation. He meets Miss Raquel Ortega, the head of the math department, who guides him to his class. However, he soon faces an uphill battle as his students are disruptive and skeptical of the value of mathematics in their lives. When a false bell rings, causing chaos in the classroom, Escalante’s determination is put to the test.
Later, after a frustrating first day, Escalante reflects on his decision to leave a lucrative job in the tech industry to teach. He feels a calling to help Latino students succeed academically and is determined to inspire them.
