With the path of investigation littered with weed-like questions and paranoia, Douglas’s quest leads him back to the VR lab where he seeks to uncover the truth about Fuller’s projects and, in particular, his last letter. Despite the concerns of his coworker Jason, Douglas plunges back into the virtual world as he assumes the identity of Joan Ferguson, a wealthy bank clerk.
As he navigates this richly rendered landscape, he encounters a VR double of Fuller, known as Grierson, who renders him stumped with his own fragmentary memories. The more Douglas explores, the more he uncovers hidden complexities of layered identities within the simulation, ultimately leading him to the bartender, the same Ashton who unearthed reality’s burdens.
