Old Ted Narracott, Albert's father, makes a questionable decision to purchase Joey at a local auction, jockeying against a wealthy farmer named Lyons. Ted is determined to use Joey for plowing despite warnings from friends about the horse's weakness. After acquiring Joey, he faces immediate familial conflict as his wife, Rose, expresses frustration over their financial strain.
In a twist of events, Ted finds himself struggling to pay the rent after the plowing fails. Albert, passionate about horse training, intervenes and takes it upon himself to train Joey. His dedication to the horse is admirable, and over time, he earns Joey's trust and confidence, forging a deeper bond.
