As the village faces hard times, the specter of World War One creeps closer. Despite his father's decisions, Albert remains hopeful that he and Joey can stay together. When the war is declared, Ted decides to sell Joey to the military to ensure the family's survival. Albert intervenes and offers his service in the war, promising to keep Joey safe.
