At the same time, a young peasant named Espin encounters Kristen, leading to a fateful meeting when she accidentally knocks him into icy waters. Though they have a brief lunch together, Kristen does not reveal her identity as she continues her journey. Espin returns home to his brothers, only to learn that their father is discontented with him due to his mishap in the river. Tensions mount when the brothers set out for a hunting expedition, leaving Espin alone.
