Fey’s experiences highlight the horrors present within concentration camps. Witnessing the daily deaths of fellow prisoners from sickness or execution creates an atmosphere thick with despair. They confront the stark reality that survival is threatened by the constant fear of the SS’s cruel whims, evidenced by the fate of Georg Elser, who was executed just before the innocence of others was to be sacrificed.
Throughout this suffering, the bond between the hostages strengthens. They become a family, drawing strength from one another as they fight against hopelessness.
