The mantra of "calculated risk" often reassured officials overseeing nuclear tests in Nevada. However, the most unpredictable and treacherous risk factor was the weather. With the wind serving as an uncontrollable force, the radioactive fallout from detonations could easily drift into populated areas, affecting not only military personnel but also residents living in the surrounding regions. One particular incident saw radioactive smoke from a test drifting into Snow Canyon National Park, leaving contamination in its wake.
