Gustave Whitehead, born in Germany as Gustav Weißkopf, moved to the United States where he pursued his dreams of aviation. Despite his lack of academic credentials, Whitehead was determined to succeed. He constructed a series of flying machines, most notably his No. 21, which some believe was capable of powered flight. Eyewitness accounts from 1901 detail Whitehead commencing a flight that elicited awe as he soared approximately 50 feet above the ground.
