The 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allowed Iran to curtail its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from sanctions. However, President Trump’s withdrawal from the deal in 2018, citing insufficient measures to curb Iran’s military ambitions, led to a deterioration of trust on both sides. Current U.S. sanctions have crippled the Iranian economy while Iran has ramped up uranium enrichment activities, escalating the nuclear threat.
